The Northwest Tennessee Workforce Board and the American Job Centers of Northwest Tennessee are excited to announce #WORKlife, a new youth work experience program! The purpose of this new program is to assist young adults transitioning from high school to either work or postsecondary education.
Many students graduate from high school without a plan of what to do next. Ideally, #WORKlife participants are placed in worksites that fit their unique career interests, and are able to learn occupational skills required of that position. Participants may work up to 37.5 hours per week for up to six months.
In addition to gaining valuable hands-on experience and learning general work skills (i.e. soft-skills), such as attendance, punctuality, professional communication, teamwork, etc., participants earn the higher of $8.00 per hour or 80% of the typically wage paid for the position. For instance, if a position typically pays $15 per hour, a YWE participant would earn 80% of $15.00, or $12.00 per hour.
The Northwest area is currently working with our local high schools to promote work experience opportunities this summer for students transitioning out of high schools, particularly for those who do not plan to go on to postsecondary or may not necessarily have a plan for after graduation.
